The Online Version of CHEMCompete-II: An Organic Chemistry Card Game to Differentiate between Substitution and Elimination Reactions of Alcohols

Published:

We previously published CHEMCompete-II, a card game shown to be successful at improving student comprehension of substitution and elimination reactions of alcohols.4 Once the pandemic disrupted in-person academic instruction, it was impossible to play CHEMCompete-II face-to-face. However, given the effectiveness of the game, as well as the difficulty of substitution and elimination reactions of alcohols, the need to convert the game onto an online platform to accommodate remote learning of this concept was urgent. Additionally, an online organic chemistry game on substitution and elimination reactions of alcohols has yet to be designed. Here, we describe the online version of CHEMCompete-II, and compare its effectiveness in improving student comprehension of these reactions to that of the physical version.

Defining the Metaverse through the lens of academic scholarship, news articles, and social media

Published:

The emergence of the Metaverse has received varied attention from academic scholars, news media, and social media. While the term ’Metaverse’ has been around since Neil Stevenson’s 1992 novel, Snow Crash, the definition of the Metaverse changes depending on who and when it is described. In this study we analyze various works about the Metaverse from ACM publications on the topic, to news media reports, to discussions on social media. Using topic modeling techniques and natural language analysis, we show how each community speaks about and defines the Metaverse.

Creating Tangible VR Spaces for Exploring Algorithm Complexity and Data Structures

Published:

This research explores the use of virtual reality (VR) in Computer Science education to enhance the visualization and understanding of algorithm complexity and data structures. The proposed VR system aims to provide undergraduate students with a more tangible and interactive learning experience, allowing them to interact with algorithms and data structures in a virtual environment. Through the implementation of immersive techniques and real-time visualization, students can manipulate and observe the behavior of these abstract concepts. The VR application covers topics such as algorithm analysis, queues, stacks, tree structures, and algorithmic complexity. The use of VR in Computer Science education has the potential to transform teaching methods and provide instructors with valuable supplementary materials. Future studies will evaluate the impact of VR on student learning outcomes, and the VR application will be made available for further research and instruction in the field.
